Volunteer at Utopia Science Fiction Literary Magazine!

Do you have a passion for reading and writing? Utopia Science Fiction Magazine is looking for volunteers to join our editorial team.

Assistant Editor - Manuscript Reader

We are currently seeking first readers for poetry and fiction. We will keep applications on file for a full year, and should we need extra hands, choose from that list.

Qualifications

Must have regular access to internet and E-mail.
Must be fluent in English. This includes a reasonably solid grasp of spelling , grammar, and punctuation.
Must be available to commit to self-directed work at least 3-5 hours a week.
Must be able to express themselves clearly in writing and effectively summarize.
Must show discretion. Details about submissions are only shared among the small staff at Utopia Science Fiction.

Preferences

Previous experience on staff of any publication.
Familiarity with the work published by Utopia Science Fiction and what we're looking for.
A background in or basic familiarity with science (for fiction).
A good sense of what makes a good science fiction story.

Responsibilities

Read up to 5 stories a week
Vote yes or no and provide a paragraph or two that explains your reaction to the work and why you think it would or would not be a good fit for our magazine.
Pass good or promising stories along to the Editor.
Write a rejection note to stories you choose not to accept.

Let us know whether you prefer poetry or fiction.
Include a list of 3-5 of your favorite science fiction short story authors or favorite science-fiction poets and briefly explain what you like about them.
Include a list of two of your favorite stories or poems Utopia Science Fiction has published (feel free to look at our archives for ideas). Write a brief paragraph explaining what you liked about it. (Tell us what you really think, rather than what you think you want us to hear!)

If accepted as a reader you will not be allowed to submit content to Utopia Science Fiction. Readers will get a free e-subscription to Utopia Science Fiction Magazine. This is a great opportunity to see current trends in SF poetry and short fiction!

Outreach Manager

We are currently seeking a marketing volunteer to help with marketing and social aspects of our magazine. We will keep applications on file for a full year, and should we need extra hands, choose from that list. Each position receives a $50 monthly stipend.

Qualifications

Must be social, energetic, friendly, and willing to interact cordially with our readers and writers via e-mail and social media.
Must be tech savvy, with familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, or other social media platforms.
Must be interested in science trivia, science fiction, reading, and writing.
Must be marketing and outreach savvy.
Must be able to express themselves clearly in writing.
Must be available for self-directed work for 3-5 hours a week.

Preferences

Previous marketing or outreach experience.
Ability to be inventive and generate ideas.
Ability to plan and execute a social media/online marketing campaign.
Familiarity with our current Facebook and Twitter feeds.
Familiarity with Utopia Science Fiction's mission and publications.

Responsibilities

Generating social media content.
Actively expanding readership.
Seeking out and creating opportunities for sponsorship and partnership with other organizations and magazines.
Thinking of Innovate ways to promote our magazine.
Generating ideas to actively engage with our current readers through contests, events, blog posts, etc.
Helping in marketing subscriptions and merchandise.
