“I confess to the whole thing,” said Montrose. “I’ll tell you how I broke into the Skyvault, who my accomplices were, and every last detail along the way. When I finish, you will let me walk out that door without a single charge, and I give it a fifty-fifty chance that you’ll thank me as I leave.”

Inspector Graves eyed Montrose. His bushy eyebrows and gray, scruffy mustache did not twitch a single hair. Finally, he said, “That outcome seems highly unlikely, Mr. Montrose.”
​
“I sincerely agree.”
​
Graves pushed a battered recorder across the stainless steel table. The device’s tiny solar battery shone in the harsh LED lights of the interrogation room. “Before we start, please state your name for the record.”
